Ang Mo Kio Secondary School is the first secondary school to be established in Ang Mo Kio New Town. It officially started to function on 2nd January 1979 in the premises of Hwi Yoh Secondary School with 12 secondary classes.

On 20th September 1980, it was officially declared opened by Mr Yeo Toon Chia, then Member of Parliament for Ang Mo Kio Constituency. The school occupied its premises in Ang Mo Kio Street 22 from 12 July 1979 to 31st December 1999.

AMKSS was headed by pioneer Principal, Mr Tan Joo Kheng, followed by Miss Monica Quek Swee Imm, Mrs Tan Guat Kim, Madam Doreen Yip Woon Yong, Miss Paramita Bandara and Miss Tan Siew Piang.

Mr Tan Chee Siong , the current Principal took charge with effect from 15 December 2004.
