English Language Department

Our aim at Coral Primary School is to nurture our pupils into proficient users of English.

The school strives to create a vibrant academic environment whereby passion for English can be cultivated and instilled in our pupils, through programmes and activities organized by the school.

Our programmes are mounted to provide a platform for pupils to use English both functionally and creatively. As the basis for language learning starts from reading, much emphasis and support have been provided to cultivate the reading habit in our pupils.

  1. Reading Programme

Our Media Resource Library, Book Bay , further promotes reading for our pupils by the provision of quality books and magazines. Pupils are also encouraged to take part in Reading and Language activities and competitions organized in the Book Bay .

Tuning In Programme
Silent Reading Time (SRT) before school begins is one way of motivating pupils to read. Pupils are allocated time on certain days to read a book independently for 15 minutes. They are also introduced to new Library book arrivals by the teachers.

Coral Reader Programme
To further motivate our pupils, they are encouraged to take part in the Coral Reader Programme at the Book Bay . Pupils who are able to complete a certain quota of books are awarded points which they can utilize to exchange for tokens before the end of each academic year.

Extended Reading
Reading is carried out extensively in the classrooms. Pupils widen their knowledge through Supplementary Reading Cards(Lower level) and 'Stories Around the World' series(Upper level). Our P6 pupils are kept up to date with current affairs through their weekly reading and activities conducted in class by means of ‘Little Red Dot’, The Straits Times edition for primary students.

PIER , Programme to encourage Independent and Enthusiastic Readers(Lower level), aims to inculcate a good reading habit among our younger pupils by allowing them to take home different books for the weekend to read, with the parents as support.

Reading Strategies
Teachers adopt the strategies, 'Read Aloud' (Upper level), whereby pupils are able to listen to the teacher read for about ten minutes before the start of the lesson, and ‘Shared Book Approach’(Lower level), wherebypupils get to read a big storybook per week with their teacher. Small storybooks of the same title as the big storybooks are freely available in the class library for pupils to reread the books to enhance their language acquisition skills. These strategies provide our pupils a good role model to follow and at the same time allow for the development of good listening skills.

A 'Reading Corner' is set up in every class whereby students can read their favourite book or share it with a friend. During Library Week, pupils focus their attention on various book-related activities which help to promote reading and the love of books in our pupils.

  1. Language and Oral Skills

Oral Skills
To build up our pupils' confidence in their oral skills, pupils are given opportunity to do class presentations whereby they can speak on any topic in 'Show and Tell'.

Thinking Maps
The use of Thinking Maps, as a strategy and teaching tool for organizing information, is an on-going activity in every classroom during language, writing and reading time. An example will be where pupils use various Thinking Maps to brainstorm for ideas, to describe characters, to plan stories and to categorize information.

STELLAR
Coral was among a group of 30 schools invited to take up STELLAR, Strategies for the Teaching of English Language, in 2006. STELLAR which is developed by the English Language Curriculum Officers from Ministry of Education is a complete English Language package with big storybooks, small storybooks, CDs and worksheets and covers all aspects of our pupils’ learning. Our pupils are taught core language skills like grammar, vocabulary and phonics simultaneously through the usage of the big story books.

The 3 strategies used in STELLAR are Shared Book Approach(SBA), Modified Language Experience Approach(MLEA) and Learning Centres(LC).
