Dear Parents/Guardians,
  • “A Blessed and Successful 2008 to you and your family”. The home and school are partners-in-education as such we need to have a common understanding of what we hope to achieve while your child is in EVPS. Let me take this opportunity to reiterate the vision and mission of the school which was crafted to better reflect the strong emphasis on the character development of the pupils. We believe that with strong values guiding them and being independent learners, they will be in a better position to face any challenges in future with wisdom and confidence.

  • Vision : A dynamic school with a spirit of excellence and a culture of care.

  • Mission : To nurture pupils to be Independent Learners; Reflective, Driven, Confident.

  • Values : The values of Commitment, Compassion, Respect, Integrity, Self-Discipline and Perseverance remain constant as the school’s core values. The values have been translated into observable actions which the pupils can practise. The pupils’ conduct in the Holistic Report Card is based on the practise of the school values.

  • Our Focus in 2008 is in the areas of academic excellence, character development, innovation and creativity, national education and building the capacity of our staff to better deliver the results in these areas. These areas align to the 5 strategic thrusts :
  • 1. Cognitive Growth and Development
  • 2. Character Development
  • 3. Staff Well-Being
  • 4. Collaboration with Partners
  • 5. Physical Development and Aesthetics Enrichment

  • As partners-in-education, the role of the parents is critical if we are to achieve the vision through the mission. We need all parents to work with us by giving us your fullest support, cooperation and understanding. Let’s collaborate to bring out the best in each and every child in the school.

  • 1. Safety and Security
  • Your child’s safety is of utmost importance to us. We have put in place safety and security measures to ensure this. One of the measures is to closely monitor movement of all visitors to the school, as such we seek your cooperation to proceed to the general office with your request before meeting up with your child or his/her teachers.

  • Only parents of primary 1 pupils are allowed in the canteen during recess time, 9.30am to 10.00am, for the first three days (Wednesday, 2nd Jan ’08 to Friday, 4th Jan ’08). Please refrain from walking to other parts of the school. Rest assured that we will take good care of your child.

  • Another safety measure in place is that parents who fail to fetch their children (Pri 1 and Pri 2) by 1.15pm will have to fetch them from the General Office. Please understand that the form teachers are required for other duties after school.
  • 2. Pupil’s Time-Table / Term 1 School Calendar
  • Once the class time-table has been given to your child, please teach your child to pack his/her bag according to the time-table (especially for pupils in Pr 1 to Pri 3). Wherever possible, the pupils’ books will be kept in school to lighten their schoolbag. Help us to monitor that your child does not bring extra things which may add to the weight of the bag.

  • The Term 1 School Calendar for 2008 is linked for your reference.
  • 3. Pupils’ Handbook 2008
  • The handbook serves as a communication tool between the parents and the teachers. Please check the handbook daily for updates from the teachers and homework assigned. Sign against the message from the teachers and the teachers will do likewise when you write to them. Do spend time to go through the important information found in the Handbook with your child.

  • 4. Topical/Class Test
  • You will be kept informed of your child’s progress throughout the year. Early identification of areas of weakness and intervention as well as close monitoring by you and the child’s teachers will go a long way to help your child succeed. Please do not hesitate to contact the teacher to find out how you can help your child get ahead.

  • 5. Pupils’ Responsibility
  • Pupils must take schoolwork seriously if they wish to do well in the exams. They have to take responsibility for their own learning and be consistent in their effort. To help your child prepare for this role, we seek your cooperation to monitor your child’s homework and plan a home timetable together so that time is set aside each day for homework and revision. It is essential that the pupils have a strong foundation at the lower levels so that the upper primary teachers are given the opportunity to consolidate the learning and prepare them for the PSLE. Preparation for PSLE starts at P4 and P5 as the PSLE covers topics from P4, 5 and 6. Early intervention will ensure success.

  • 6. Remedial Programme
  • The remedial programme for P3 to P6 will commence in week 2 (from 8th Jan onwards) If your child has been selected for the programme, please ensure that he/she turns up regularly. Attendance and progress will be monitored. Any pupil especially at the upper levels who fail to meet the baseline for their respective levels will be required to attend bridging classes during the school holidays.

  • 7. Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) Programme
  • CCA is compulsory for all pupils in Primary 4, 5 and 6. Pupils in Primary 1, 2 and 3 may opt to join certain CCAs based on their talent and potential. Pupils who are in the CCAs which are the school’s niche areas - Choir, Dance, Handchimes and Netball must remain in these CCAs throughout until Primary 6. All CCAs will commence in week 2. Pupils have to be present at all CCA sessions. At the end of Primary 6, pupils will be issued with a CCA record as testimonial for their secondary schools.

  • 2008 is the year of the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) for primary schools. Our Choir, Dance and Handchimes groups will be participating in the competition. If your child/ward is in any of the three identified groups, please give us your support and encouragement by ensuring that your child attends all practices faithfully. Commitment to training sessions helps build strength of character and underscores the importance of teamwork. All the activities are group activities and everyone plays an important role to secure the best award for the group as well as the school.
  • 8. Relief Teachers
  • It is out of necessity that we may have to employ relief teachers to cover for our teachers who are away from school for valid reasons. You have our assurance that all relief teachers employed are registered with the Ministry of Education and deemed suitable. To ensure standards, our permanent teachers will be on hand to guide them.

  • 9. Health Matters
  • Our pupils’ health is important to us. As such, it would be much appreciated if your child refrains from coming to school if he/she is deemed by a doctor to be unwell. Pupils who are absent from school must submit a medical certificate to the form teacher on their return to school. After a long holiday, the procedure is for each child to submit their travel declaration on the first day of school if they had not handed them to their teachers before the end of the school term. We also require that pupils who are observed to be unwell to be sent home as soon as possible so that medical treatment can be sought early. I look forward to your utmost cooperation on this matter.

  • 10. 2007 PSLE Results
  • The cohort has done us proud with a 100% passes in the merged stream. Our joint top pupils were Lin Yu and Shawn Tan from P6^Commitment. Our top performer in the Foundation Stream is Mythali Marilyn.

  • Each of the pupils have benefited from a stable home environment and strong support and encouragement from their parents.
  • 11. Reading Faster, Learning Better
  • I would like to end my letter with the article of the above title which has been documented in many studies on language acquisition.
  • Should you want to contribute in one way or another or seek clarification, please do not hesitate to call 6783 6531 or email to evps@moe.edu.sg. Let’s keep the channel of communication open between the home and school as we work as Team EVPS to prepare your child to succeed not only in school but for life.
  • An equation in life to reflect upon:
    A. T. T. I. T. U. D. E.
    1 + 20 +20 + 9 + 20 + 21 + 4 + 5 = 100%
It’s our ATTITUDE that makes our life 100% heaven or hell.

    Yours-in-education,

    Miss Veronica Tay
