Science begins for children when they
discover that they can learn about the world through their own
actions, such as blowing soap bubbles, planting and watching a
seed germinate, or running with a paper windmill in their hands.
Indeed, young children are excited about science when they are
given the chance to “do” science.
Hands-on science experiences, together with conversations
about what is occurring are the best method for developing
children’s science process skills.
These are experiences that most children enjoy.
Look at the lilies that are in full bloom in the school
garden. Are they
grown from bulbs or seeds ? The
school environment fosters teachable moments that teachers can use
to help our pupils become fascinated with science.
In order to provide more hands-on experiences for our
pupils the school has loaned mini-interactive science exhibits
with materials and worksheets from the Singapore Science Centre.
The objective is to engage our pupils in fun and creative
activities beyond the textbook.
This arrangement with the Science Centre serves as rich
resources for teachers to use in their lessons.
The exhibits on magnets, pressure, batteries, phases of the
moon, pendulum, static electricity , gears, generator and puzzle
circuit are put up in the “Science Explora” corner where
pupils can have a go at the experiments or discovering learning
during recess. These
exhibits are spread out over three terms.
Teachers can tap these learning experiences for discussion
, which is a powerful tool for making our pupils think and refocus
their ideas. Pupils’
interest in science can promote further growth and quests for
knowledge and it is this belief that anchors our programmes and
activities.
