Dear Primary Six Pupils,
2008 has almost come to an end and it has seen Jurong
West Secondary School (JWSS) continue its tradition of continuous improvement. New
milestones were set on numerous fronts, ranging from academia and co-curricula
activities to that of character development. There is however one last event before we
could truly close the year on a high-note. This event is the Secondary One registration,
which would be taking place in December 2008. We hope to continue to be the premier
choice for most Primary Six students in the Jurong West vicinity as we embark on our
mission to improve and guide each individual to achieve his/her greatest potential. Our
dedicated teachers as well as wide-ranging programmes enable us to achieve just
that.
Why Choose JWSS?
There are many things parents and students alike look out
for when making the important decision of selecting a suitable school. These concerns
could be the school environment and facilities, academic achievements of the school,
co-curricular activities and enrichment programmes on offer, locality, so on and so
forth. We totally understand these concerns and can assure you that JWSS has lots to
offer. In December 2007, JWSS was a choice for a whopping 1979 Primary Six students, of
which, more than 70% of them made JWSS their first choice. These are probably the
reasons behind them making JWSS their top choice.
School Environment
The success of JWSS is based largely on the school's
strong emphasis on instilling discipline and developing character within the child.
Aided by the unwavering dedication of its staff as well as close collaboration with
parents, this translates to a positive study environment. The ripple-effect would be the
positive development of each child in many areas by the time he/she completes his/her
education here.
Academic Excellence
JWSS has been achieving creditable results when it comes
to the academia. This is despite spotting a relatively short history of just seven years
or just four years if one only takes into account the graduating batch of 2004-2007. In
2008, the biggest prize has to be the twin value-added awards to our Express and Normal
streams. On top of that, our Normal stream achieved a top-5 band. This year also marks
our debut in establishing a cut-off point for entry, namely: 190(Express), 167(NA) and
94(NT). Indeed, these are significant milestones for the school.
Co-curriculum Activities
In addition to discipline and academic excellence,
co-curriculum activities (CCAs) further supplements and complement the development of
the child. JWSS is a niche school in the area of Uniformed Groups. In 2008 we achieved
a whopping 4 gold awards for National Cadet Corp(Land), Boys' Brigade, Red Cross,
National Police Cadet Corp, and 1 silver award for National Civil Defence Cadet Corp.
This puts JWSS amongst the best in the country. Subsequently, we were awarded our third
sustained achievement award (SSA) for uniformed groups. Not to be outdone, our
C-division hockey team (boys) came in 3rd in the country while our C-division basketball
team (girls) came in 3rd in the zone. 11 hockey players received zonal or national
colours awards, a record haul for the school. Finally, we also achieved 1 silver award
at this year's Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) in art as well as our first SSA for
aesthetics. It has been a fantastic haul in 2008 and may it continue for years to
come.
Other Achievements
In 2007, we were awarded the developmental award for
National Education. 2008 saw us awarded the developmental award for Character
Development, evidence to the school's efforts and commitment towards this area. We were
awarded a further health award, the Cherish Award (bronze), for our efforts in promoting
resilience, in tandem with one of our school's core values.
Facilities and Locality
JWSS is also well-equipped in terms of facilities. Some
of which are, a gymnasium, a football field, a hockey pitch, a multi-purpose hall, 4
computer laboratories, 3 IT resource rooms, a Cybercafe, 6 science laboratories and an
indoor sportshall which would be completed soon. Jurong West Secondary School is
located near Boon Lay MRT Station and is a mere 5-10 minutes walk from the station.
Make JWSS your 1st choice!!!
Yours Sincerely,
The Principal
JWSS Speech
& Prize Giving
Day 2008
Mdm. Ho Geok Choo,
MP for West Coast GRC (Boon Lay Division) was the Guest of Honour. In her speech,
Mdm. Ho described JWSS as one of the top schools in Jurong today in terms of holistic
education and outcomes. She however warned that there can be no room for complacency.
We have to continue the push for standards to be raised from time to time. She later
toured the academic exhibition, inspected the school's uniformed groups and opened
the new facilities built. We thank Mdm. Ho for her presence and support.
