Olympic Day Run 2008

On 12 July 2008, Kent Ridge Secondary School sent her team of 10 Sports Leaders to participate in the Olympic Day Run. The event was held at West Coast Park where students from all over Singapore came to pledge their support for the Beijing Olympics 2008.

The first Olympics Day Run was held on 23 June 1987. Over the past 20 years, countries all over the world have adopted this celebration of the Olympic Day, to spread the Olympic Ideals.

7th Inter-School National Scrabble Championship 2008

Our school sent 3 teams made up of 15 students to the 7th Inter-School National Scrabble Championship preliminary rounds held on Saturday, 12th April 2008 at Queenstown Secondary School. 120 teams from other schools participated. Our team 2 succeeded in qualifying for the Finals which were held on Sunday, 29th June 2008 at Downtown East D'Marquee. Our team 2 comprising of Team Captain Gaby So and Team members Clement Ngu, Wesley Tay, Victoria Huang and Muhd Nuh played valiantly against their opponents. They did not win any of their matches but did the school proud by being unanimously selected by the judges for the Fair-Play Award. This award is given to the team that displays honesty, integrity and good sportsmanship. What an honour for the team! Incidentally, Kent Ridge also won the same award in 2006. Well done, Kent Ridgeans for upholding our school's values.

Arts Enrichment Programme

Sec 1 Drama Enrichment Programme

The Drama Enrichment Programme was organised for the Sec 1 Express and Normal Academic students this year. At the end of the course, students

At the end of the course, the students held a mini-performance for each other.

Sec 2 Art Enrichment Programme

Every Sec 2 student attended a ceramics workshop. For the first part of the workshop, the students spent an hour creating their own ceramic artwork under the guidance of the instructors. After the students had created their artworks, they visited Dragon Kiln where they learnt more about ceramics by touring the exhibition and having hands-on experience at throwing pots. It was an enriching and enjoyable experience.

Sec 3 Music Enrichment Programme

Students were given a choice of either learning to play the guitar or the percussion instruments.  In the guitar course, students were able to play at least 2 songs by the end of the two-day course.  In the percussion course, students learnt the local ethnic fusion percussions and Latin Global Percussions.  They were introduced to proper drums playing techniques and percussion rudiments.  It was truly heartening to see the students able to achieve playing an instrument in a short duration.

Chinese New Year Concert

This year, our concert not only showcased the talents of our students but also the captivating performances by our guests, the Shanghai students who were here under the Twinning Programme. Xu Jia Cheng who sang a slow number mesmerized nearly everyone with his impressive vocal range. He received bouquets not only from the girls but from the boys as well.

Besides watching performances, selected teachers and students also had a good time participating in the 'Fastest Fingers First' competition (Orange Peeling Competition). Zhang Ying, a Shanghai student emerged as the champion.

To help our School Needy Students, a "Guess It Right" contest was organised. A week before the contest, a large transparent container filled with oranges was placed in front of the office. Participants were supposed to guess the number of oranges and they donated 50 cents for each guess. A total of $535.50 was collected and all proceeds went to our School Needy Students Fund.

Together, we have displayed the "Heart of a Saint" (School Vision).

Malay Language Cultural Camp
Learning Journey - Pulau Ubin

The Secondary One students went on a Malay Language Cultural Camp at Pulau Ubin. The objective of the programme is to expose students to the Malay culture and kampong living.

Some of the activities on that day include kampong house tour, Chek Jawa discovery and batik painting. Students learnt how to collect water from the well and they also played some Malay traditional games. The hands-on session was great as students brought their own batik painting home as souvenir.

It was a wonderful experience - learning beyond the classroom.

STOMPKR
Sec One Orientation Camp Discovery 2008

STOMPKR Camp was organized for the Sec Ones by the Student Council Camp Discovery Committee 2008.  The councillors worked really hard over the November/December 2007 holidays planning for the camp.

Stomp Breaker managed to get our Sec Ones to break the ice while Stomping Dynamite got them running around school to get to know the school vision, motto and values through games.

As a class, they put their minds and voices together at Stomp Box and created their own unique class cheer.

Our Sec Ones enjoyed dancing to our very own mass dance, Stompede choreographed by the student councillors. It was a rewarding experience for the councillors knowing that the Sec Ones had enjoyed the camp and have settled into the Kent Ridge Family.

CCA Fair 2008

The CCA fair was a great success with the effort put in by CCA students and teachers. All CCA groups attempted to outwit one another by displaying their achievements and programmes in order to entice the Secondary 1 to join them. With the wonderful display and fantastic showcase of their programmes, Secondary 1 students had a tough time deciding on their CCA in Kent Ridge.
