Teachers’ Day Celebration cum Be Yourself Day 2007
31 August 2007
As a kick off to Teacher’s Day Celebration this year, the Student Council coordinated a series of activities to provide students the opportunity to show their appreciation to teachers who have made a difference to their learning experience in Kent Ridge.
Two weeks before the celebration, students sent in song dedications which were read and played before the morning assembly every morning. Besides that, students were also given the opportunity to pen down their appreciation on personalized T-shirts which were then presented to all teachers as a gift.
On the day itself, Members of the Parents’ Support Group (PSG) prepared delicious refreshments for the teachers before the hall programme. Teachers and students were entertained by student performers who put up a variety of presentations such as a magic show, a self penned music composition accompanied by a guitar and 2 other singing performances.

The school participated in Be Yourself Day Celebration on that day too. Students showed their creativity through their dressing. This year’s theme is “Reveal your Style”. Selected students presented an impromptu fashion parade and wowed the audience with their interesting outfits.
Students found the experience meaningful as, not only did they get the chance to be different for a day, they also contributed to helping the less fortunate in our community through a donation which entitled them to be themselves for the day.

Sec 3 Entrepreneurship
To instill the entrepreneurial spirit in students, the school participated in the Young Entrepreneurs Skill, or YESCOM. The YESCOM team is made up of selected Sec 3 class representatives. They attended a seminar on entrepreneurship and learnt the essentials of starting and managing a business. They were also involved in an on-the-job assignment where they were given the opportunity to design an advertisement for companies. The student representatives managed to emerge as one of the top 10 schools and qualified for the next round where they had to exercise their creativity to put together a storyboard and concept of their advertisement, and to present it to the panel of judges.
Besides that, the class representatives also participated in the public fair held at HDB Hub in Toa Payoh on 1 July 2007. They raised $389.00 for the school and had the experience of being their own boss for the day and marketed their own products. The other Sec 3 students who did not participate in the public fair, had the opportunity to set up stalls in school during National Day celebration on 8 August 2007 where they were given the chance to sell their products and creations.
Students enjoyed the valuable learning experience as not only did they get to work together as a class to explore their entrepreneurship skill, they also contributed to the less fortunate in the community.
“RISE” music video production
Sung by Stefanie Sun
12 Kent Ridgeans took part in the making of the music video “Rise", the official Theme Song for the ASEAN 40th Anniversary celebrations.
"Rise" was composed by Singaporean music icon Dick Lee, arranged by award-winning local composer Kenn C., and was performed by Singapore's pop superstar Stefanie Sun, who is accompanied by a cast of children from across ASEAN.
The highlight of the event was an opportunity for the students to meet and star in the music video with their idol Stefanie Sun.
We have not been informed of the date of its television debut yet, but below is the link to the 13th ASEAN Summit website where you can check out the music video first!

National Day Celebrations 2007
The school celebrated the Nation’s 42nd birthday on Wednesday, 8th August 2007.
The day started with a formal combined Uniform Group parade, singing of our National Anthem and recitation of the Pledge. Thereafter, our Principal, Mr Koh read the National Day message.
KRnival began after the formal ceremony and the school was filled with a festive mood. The entire third level of the school building was abuzz with activities such as game stalls set up by our Secondary 2 classes, food stalls, karaoke corner, festivity stalls, Secondary 3 entrepreneurship stalls, performances by our student buskers and movie screening. Students, parents and staff members were given coupons and were free to spend them as they liked.
The celebrations ended on a high note with a concert. We were privileged to be able to invite 2 celebrity guests, Imran Ajmain and Maiya, an ex-student of Kent Ridge to grace the event. The artistes thrilled the audience with some of their well-known tunes. They also joined in the singing of a few national songs together with students from the choir.
All in all, everyone had an enjoyable time.
Peer Group Adviser Programme
Recipient of the award for the
Best Question & Answer Section in the PGA Finale 2007,
Web page Competition!
Peer Group Advisers (PGA) programme coordinated by the Family and Juvenile Justice Centre (FJJC) provides students the opportunity to experience the workings of the Juvenile Court, as they are given a chance to sit in Court proceedings and take part in discussions with the Juvenile Court judge in chambers. The programme was first initiated in 1996.
In June 2007, 10 Secondary 2 Kent Ridgeans were selected to participate in this programme. Their journey into the Juvenile Justice System in Singapore began with a briefing in May where they received reading materials and brochures on Singapore’s Justice System.
On 27 June 2007, the peer advisers and teacher supervisors had a chance to sit in the public gallery of the Juvenile Court to be acquainted with the Court proceedings. Participants also gained a better understanding of how the juvenile offenders are dealt with, types and seriousness of the offences committed by youth and the consequences of their criminal behaviour. PGA participants were also fortunate to then have the opportunity to discuss a case with the Juvenile Court Magistrate.
Participants were subsequently given two weeks to consolidate their learning by creating web pages to provide resources for their peers, teachers and parents. They created Question and Answer pages on the common juvenile crimes and blogged their knowledge, thoughts and feelings to share their experiences with their peers.
On 14 July 2007, our PGA participants presented their webpage to a panel of judges and the audience. We are proud that our Kent Ridge PGA members clinched the award for the Best Question & Answer Section in the PGA Finale 2007, Web page Competition! Look out for our web pages! They will be uploaded soon.
RACIAL HARMONY DAY 2007
This year, Kent Ridge Secondary School commemorated Racial Harmony Day by playing traditional childhood games. The objective is to bond students of various races together in a fun way. Students of every class were divided into five groups to play chapteh, five stones, marbles, pick-up-sticks and kuti-kuti. The various game stations were set up in the classrooms and along the corridors, and the students were given ten minutes to play the game at each station. Chocolates were given to the game winners at each station, and many teachers joined in the fun as well. It was a memorable and fun day for everyone.

KR Trail 2007
KR Trail is conducted for the lower sec students on the last day of Term 1, 9th March 2007. Instead of having lessons in the classrooms, the students were involved in learning through fun and interactive activities.
The main desired outcome of KR Trail is to inject fun into students' learning experiences through activities that aim to heighten their interest in their IP subjects. KR Trail also provides opportunities for teachers to stretch their potential by challenging their creativity and innovation. Students of different races across streams are grouped together so as to provide the opportunity for interaction. To provide the platform for students to develop their leadership qualities, student councilors and ambassadors were deployed to run KR Trail.
Both the students and teachers gave very positive feedback about KR Trail. The challenging and varied activities planned have indeed enhanced students' interest in their learning. The students were observed to display school values such as Respect for Others as they learnt to work in teams and value each other's strengths. Besides that, they were also appreciative and thankful for the effort put in by the organizing committee and student leaders who ran the trail.

Girls' Brigade
Cha Fang (Thailand) CIP Trip 2006
1 - 7 Dec 2006
On the 1st of December 2006, 16 GB girls, 1 teacher and 4 other adult leaders embarked on a 7-day trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand. The trip was part of a Community Involvement Project (CIP) that the 54th Company Girls’ Brigade had decided to take on this year. For a few months before this, all the GB girls of the 54th Company had been learning simple Thai, raising funds, learning song items, preparing craft materials, preparing teaching materials and packing clothes and prizes, all in preparation for the trip.
The 54th Company had decided to visit an orphanage called Cha Fang in Chiang Mai and teach simple English through games and songs. As the girls spent time with the children there, they also taught them handicraft and led them in games sessions. While in Chiang Mai, the girls also taught English to students in a local Thai school as well as a local Chinese school.
During the visit to Cha Fang, the girls were taken aback by the living conditions of the children there. They saw how the children there wore the same clothes day after day and yet were happy and contented and looked after each other. While the girls led the children in games and gave out prizes, they were amazed at how simple things usually taken for granted in Singapore were so valued by the children there. The children that the girls taught also displayed an enthusiasm in learning that the girls were impressed with and enjoyed. The children there were reluctant to let these ‘little teachers’ go and the GB girls found it hard to leave Cha Fang. Though only a span of a few days, special bonds had been made and it was a tearful farewell on the last day there.
In the daily reflections that the girls wrote, many wrote that they had learnt to be contented with what they have and not complain about things, to be patient in teaching others, to be more caring towards those younger than them and to cherish the people around them. At the end of the trip, the girls had not only taught English or given out clothes and other goodies to the Thai children…they themselves had gained valuable experiences and lessons.
