Mother Tongue Department
Philosophy

Bilingualism is one of the cornerstones of Singapore 's education system. It is important for every student to have a good knowledge of his/her Mother Tongue so as to be able to appreciate their historical, ethnic, cultural and moral values. Through such an understanding pupils will be able to develop into wholesome human beings.

 

Learning Outcomes

 

 

The student will be able to communicate clearly and effectively in speech and writing in response to situations, purposes and audience.

The student will be a life-long learner with positive attitudes that is to, think critically and creatively.

The student will be a confident person who is a good team player and a responsible global citizen.

The student will be an ethical thinker, who possesses an understanding of what is morally right and wrong.

The student will be able to identify with the cultural heritage of his/her respective ethnic group while being able to appreciate and respect the differences in others' cultures.

Enduring Understanding

A pupil will have a life-long understanding that language is a vehicle that transmits identity and culture.

That a good understanding of one's mother tongue can enhances one's imaginative skills and encourage innovative thinking.

Skills Developed in Mother Tongue Language

The four  basic language skills the pupils will be equipped with are Reading , Oral, Listening and Writing. To enhance the development of these skills the department has planned programmes as follows:

Main Programmes

Integration of ICT in Languages - E learning for CL/ML/TL pupils.

Every pupil would have completed 4 modules per year. This programme allows pupils to access from home.

 

Planned Programmes

Reading Bear Programme

This programme was introduced to cultivate a love for reading - read more to appreciate the language and to tell stories in a creative way. To gain confidence in reading.

Buddying Programme

In Buddy Reading System, weaker pupils are buddies by the better pupils.

Our Enrichment Activities

Activities such as learning journeys and field trips are carried out to expose students to gain educational information and general knowledge. It also encourage the pupils to learn to be independent.

Structured Composition Writing

It was planned to enhance writing and communication skills. Pupils are exposed to poetry writing, report writing, writing short story and others.

Conversational CL / ML

Pupils are given an opportunity to learn a 3 rd language.

Special Programme for low ability pupils

It is a Bridging Programme in Chinese Language for weaker pupils.

Acquisition of Comprehension Skills

It was structured for pupils to have a better understanding of given passages and to answer different types of questions based on the passages. Pupils are trained to learn the different techniques in answering comprehension questions.
