By January 2008, students with a passion for business will have a greater choice of 'O' Level subjects they can take at Secondary 3 level.

In line with the Ministry of Education's initiative to introduce greater curriculum flexibility and choice for upper secondary school students, Singapore Polytechnic will be offering an Applied Subject in 2008 called Introduction to Enterprise Development (IED).

Applied subjects are taken as 'O' Level subjects and have the same rigour. They are also recognised for admission to both polytechnics and JCs.

In the Introduction to Enterprise Development course, students will be immersed in business disciplines such as marketing and finance and will be trained to apply their knowledge through the development of a business plan. Students will also get the opportunity to hone their problem-solving, presentation, team-building and communication skills.

The learning experience will take place in the same way as polytechnic courses, with an emphasis on practical hands-on learning. Besides lectures and tutorials, there will be course work, project work, group assignments and oral presentations. Students will also be involved in Entrepreneurship-themed competitions and get the chance for real-life work attachments.

The pioneer batch of Secondary 3 students will be from Fairfield Methodist Secondary School and Outram Secondary School. The 2-year course will be primarily taught by Singapore Polytechnic lecturers with school teachers co-teaching certain parts of the course.
