Outram’s Talent Development Programme In Rock Climbing

Outram Secondary is proud to be recognised by the Ministry of Education for our effort and achievement in the area of Rock-Climbing in 2007.

With two rock walls in school and a comprehensive training programme, Outram’s climbers have received many accolades in inter-school competitions and even represented Singapore in international events.

As a Niche Programme school, Outram Secondary has in place a strong developmental programme to nurture talents in Rock-Climbing. This is in line with the school’s focus on recognizing a diversity of talent and the school’s vision of becoming a Hallmark of Distinction.

ADMISSION CRITERIA
CATEGORY 1		DATES
Interested applicants who are studying in local national schools	Physical Selection Test Criteria: Able to pass physical test which covers: inclined chin-up sit and reach sit-up Climbing test - ability to climb a technical flat rockwall of height 10m without difficulty - ability to demonstrate agility and perseverance during climbing test	1st Selection Test: 24 July 2008 2nd Selection Test: 31 July 2008
	Interview Process Shortlisted candidates will be required to go through an interview

CATEGORY 2		DATES
Citizens, Permanent Residents and Foreign pupils who are currently not studying in local national schools	Academic Criteria: Must pass a school entrance exam or the Principals’ Academy Certification Test (PACT). Subjects tested are English and Mathematics.	Before submission of application form

Note: Students admitted to Outram under DSA (Rock-Climbing) are required to take up Rock-Climbing as a CCA .

Framework for Talent Development in Rock-Climbing
Level	Core Programme	Training Programme
Secondary 1	Exposure to climbing and basic skill acquisition	All Sec One pupils will go through a 6 week basic climbing course during PE lessons. Areas to be covered include safety, belaying, physical conditioning and climbing skills. Talented pupils will be given extra training outside curriculum time to prepare for external competitions.
Secondary 2	Certification and overseas climbing trip	Climbers will go through Level 1 Sport Climbing Course. They will also participate in the annual overseas climbing trip.
Secondary 3	Certification and Leadership Training	Climbers will go through Level 2 Sport Climbing Course. Leadership training in the form of camps and conferences will be conducted.
Secondary 4/5	Mentoring and International Competitions	Pupils will mentor junior climbers. Talented climbers will represent Singapore in International Competitions.
NOTE: All pupils selected through the DSA will receive equipment sponsored by the school.
