RIVERVALE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Principal's Message

With the current perpetuating from 'The Next Wave' developed during our Opening Ceremony on 6 July 2001, the energy has forged Rivervale Primary School into a place worthy of working and studying in while striving towards becoming THE RIVERVALE.

Within its short history, the school has emerged as one of the top 12 primary schools in Singapore with good progress in the 2005 PSLE results. The school also achieved good progress in 2000, 2001 and 2003. This continued achievement is a reflection of the teachers’ and pupils’ dedication and commitment in line with the school's motto to "Succeed and Excel".

Rivervale is into its ninth year. Each year, the school adopts a theme to stay up with the wave, and tirelessly strives to improve continually in providing the best learning environment for our pupils. In 2006, our efforts to "push new peaks of excellence" led us to explore the 6 areas of excellence which will form the firm foundation of our mission to succeed and excel. This year, the school sets out to rebalance our strategies to achieve the six peaks of excellence, namely: curriculum excellence, programme excellence, administration and service excellence, resource management excellence, data management excellence and people excellence.

Pupils are given protected time through white space periods to reflect on what has been learnt with the belief that more interactive programmes that engage hearts and minds will bring about a more holistic education. Effective resource management through the use of technology in teaching and learning will cater to a wider range of learning style among our pupils. Programme excellence with effective use of data will surface intervention projects to address areas of weaknesses in the teaching and learning processes to meet a diverse group of learners. With administrative and service excellence, my staff and I are confident we can delight all our stakeholders to develop our pupils to their fullest potential in their own fields.

This year, the school started with 62 classes comprising 2259 pupils, supported by 101 dedicated teachers and 10 dynamic executive and administrative staff.  Drawing on the strengths of my dedicated teachers,Rivervale Primary School will continue to employ strategies to enhance teaching and learning. Different ability groups are identified so that suitable strategies can be adopted to obtain optimal results; the high achievers are 'stretched' and challenged, the average pupils are inspired while the weaker ones are motivated with a variety of teaching approaches to make them want to learn.

IT, NE and I&E skills are infused into the curriculum to enhance creativity and thinking skills. Experiential learning in and outside school brings out the best in every child. By harnessing the talents and abilities of our pupils through mass customization, all Riverlites will be equipped with the necessary skills to meet the challenges of the future workplace. Community Engagement Programmes through National Education and community involvement activities help our pupils to strengthen their rootedness to Singapore and heighten their moral responsibility and awareness to the country. The School-Home-Community partnership has expanded to active collaboration with the following 8 organizations: UMC(NEA Partner in Recycling), Grace Lodge and Jamiyah Home(CIP), SEAB(Assessment and Examination), Junior Alumni(Yeoman Service), Punggol Grassroot Organisation(Community Engagement), Neighbouring Sec Schools(CIP). the School Parent Club (Parent Support Group) and the School Advisory Committee(SAC).  The school believes that all stakeholders have their role to play in the partnership process. Thus, the school's vision in this "Home, School and Community Partnerships" is "Forging lifelong partnerships with our stakeholders to foster synergistic collaborations, fulfilling school's, homes' and community's obligations to the education of our young." As such, our school's CIP is geared "To nurture our pupils to be socially responsible so that they understand, display and participate, in active citizenship, thereby fulfilling their responsibilities to the community." To further enhance the development of our Riverlites, the school has embarked on several new projects which are spearheaded by caring parent volunteers who spend time every Saturday to enthuse our pupils in Remote Control Aeromodelling, Weiqi, Golf and Social Entrepreneurship as part of our “Passion Games” project.

Through curriculum and programmes that help pupils to achieve academic excellence and build cohesion and civic responsibility, Rivervale Primary today is an institution that successfully nurtures growth and learning among staff and pupils. My teachers and I will focus our attention on providing our pupils with a holistic education so that we will continue to progress even further, bearing in mind our School Philosophy to ensure all our Riverlites will learn to:

* love Singapore and defend her with their hearts and souls;

* distinguish right from wrong and be positive in their outlook;

* share and put others first and have good team spirit;

* build friendships with others and create a network that will help them in their future careers;

* have a lively curiosity about things and become our future  technopreneurs;

* think for and express themselves;

* take pride in their work;

* cultivate a healthy lifestyle.
